Wired and Wireless Emergency Phone
Systems
Use in Existing Elevator Phone Cabinet
The 911 Emergency Cell Phone is the lowest hardware and service cost to meet the minimum requirements for emergency communication in an elevator.
The following provides comparison
information on elevator phones that allow an elevator passenger to
place a call for emergency assistance.
This site is intended to assist in selection of an elevator phone and service. Installation
of these systems may require collaboration with the elevator service provider and approval by
the state elevator inspector.
Some elevator phones do not have keypads so they are programmed to automatically connect to a
preprogrammed phone number with a 24 hour monitoring service yet some systems can save that 24
hour monitoring service expense by placing a free 911 call.
Most state elevator inspectors do not require the systems to meet ADA American Disabilities Act
requirements. If used in a public area your elevator phone might need to meet ADA code requirements
where the phone must not require voice communication. This could be a liability issue if the person
trapped in the elevator is deaf or unable to communicate. We suggest that you contact your state
elevator inspector if you are considering some of the 911 phone solutions for the elevator phone. The
emergency 911 phone solutions are best for private facilities such as condominiums and small private
businesses that do not have public access to the elevator where non-emergencies calls or prank calls
are very unlikely to happen. Programming telephones to a 911 center can be costly as fines may be imposed
if police or fire respond to non emergency and prank calls. 911 as a means to answer elevator phone calls
is not recommended in public access elevators for those reasons.
It is suggested you consult with the state elevator inspector for approval before you purchase any elevator
phone system other than one of the ADA speakerphone systems that complies to the American Disabilities Act. The
emergency 911 phone solutions are best for private facilities such as condominiums and small private businesses
that do not have public access to the elevator where non-emergencies calls or prank calls are very unlikely to
happen.

Benefit | The ADA Speakerphone system complies to the American Disabilities Act.The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is Federal Civil Rights Legislation enacted 1992. Most elevator emergency phone systems use communications systems that are hard wired to a local monitoring center is a difficult, cumbersome and expensive task which involves routing communication cables and wiring around or through obstacles such as floors and walls. When voice communication is transmitted between the elevator and the control station using public phone lines substantial service expenses are incurred PUSH BUTTON: A push and release push-button activates the single number dial or a ring-down line to connect the speakerphone to the emergency operator. Fully powered from the telephone line. Includes braille labels. | Wire Line Corded Phone is the lowest cost hardware, can be programmed to auto dial a monitoring service number yet may not meet ADA requirements. | Wire Line "911 Only" Corded Phone has no cost for monitoring service. May not meet ADA requirements. | The 911 Emergency Cell Phone is the lowest hardware and service cost to meet the minimum requirements for emergency communication in an elevator. This system does not require expensive hard wiring, the high cost associated with the extensive use and maintenance of public phone lines and the monitoring center service fee. Cellular is recommended when a phone line is not readily available. Test the elevator area using a Verizon cellular phone for call capability. If reception is good then the cellular unit is a good solution. This system is recommended for buildings that are 3 floors or less due to the screening out of cellular reception in taller buildings. This system is ideal for Elevette elevators. The emergency cellular phone installation will result in immediate savings. May not meet ADA requirements. |
